In 1850 author Nathaniel Hawthorne rented a small cottage in Stockbridge, Massachusetts from William Aspinwall Tappan. It was there Hawthorne wrote "Tanglewood Tales" in 1853. The cottage owner, Tappan, was so moved he named the cottage Tanglewood and eventually his own nearby estate the same. In 1936 Mary Aspinwall Tappan gave the family’s summer estate to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and today it is known as the Tanglewood Music Center. Every August singer/songwriter James Taylor, a Stockbridge resident, performs with friends to benefit the Music Center.
