Kill Devil Hill is located in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.  The giant 90 foot dune was used by the Wright brothers for their initial takeoff effort to fly their airplane. Surprisingly, due to nature's windblown sand the giant mound of sand actually moved from its original location when the Wright’s made their flights on December 17, 1903.  Kill Devil Hill was eventually stabilized and a large granite monument was placed atop to commemorate the Wright brothers.  As for crediting Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, as the historic flight location - it just happens to be close by.
